Aspect Ratios for Images and Video (A Practical Guide)

Stretch an image to the wrong shape and everyone notices. Aspect ratio is the rule that keeps photos and videos looking right at any size.

What aspect ratio means

Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between width and height, written as width:height. 16:9 means 16 units wide for every 9 tall. It describes shape, not size โ€” a 1280ร—720 and a 1920ร—1080 image are both 16:9.

Common ratios and where they fit

  • 16:9 โ€” standard video, YouTube, most screens.
  • 1:1 โ€” square, classic Instagram posts and avatars.
  • 4:5 โ€” portrait social posts (more vertical screen space).
  • 9:16 โ€” full-screen vertical video (Reels, Shorts, Stories).
  • 4:3 โ€” older displays, many cameras and slides.

Resize without distortion

To resize cleanly, keep the ratio: if you change the width, change the height by the same factor. Halving a 1600ร—900 image gives 800ร—450 โ€” still 16:9. Change only one dimension and the image squashes or stretches.

Find a missing dimension

If you need a 16:9 image at 1200 px wide, the height is 1200 ร— 9 รท 16 = 675. The general rule: new height = new width ร— (ratio height รท ratio width). This is the calculation behind every 'fit to ratio' task.

Calculate it instantly

ToolJolt's aspect-ratio calculator finds the missing width or height for any ratio, so your exports always fit the target perfectly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common video aspect ratio?

16:9 โ€” it is the standard for YouTube, TVs and most monitors. Vertical video uses 9:16.

How do I resize an image without stretching it?

Scale width and height by the same factor so the ratio stays constant. If you only change one, the image distorts.

What height is a 16:9 image at 1920 wide?

1080 pixels: 1920 ร— 9 รท 16 = 1080.
