How to Calculate Your Exact Age (Years, Months and Days)

Working out an age sounds like simple subtraction โ€” until months of different lengths and leap years get involved. Here is how to do it correctly.

The basic idea

Your age is the time elapsed from your date of birth to today. The tricky part is expressing it in years, months and days, because months have 28โ€“31 days and years occasionally have 366. Naive subtraction gives wrong day counts.

Why leap years matter

A leap year adds 29 February every four years (with century exceptions). If your span crosses leap days, a day-based age shifts accordingly. This is why 'age in days' is rarely a round multiple of 365.

Years, months, days โ€” done right

The correct method subtracts the date parts with borrowing: if today's day is earlier in the month than your birth day, you 'borrow' a month (using the previous month's real length), and similarly for months and years. This yields the familiar 'X years, Y months, Z days'.

Useful beyond birthdays

  • Eligibility checks (age limits, retirement, schooling).
  • Anniversaries and milestones in exact days.
  • Project or contract durations between two dates.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate age in days?

Count the actual calendar days between the two dates, including any 29 February that falls in between. A tool does this accurately; manual estimates using 365 drift over time.

Why isn't my age a whole number of years in days?

Because years vary (leap years have 366 days) and months differ in length, so total days do not divide evenly by 365.

Can I calculate the time between two non-birthday dates?

Yes โ€” the same method works for any start and end date, which is handy for durations and anniversaries.
