Understanding BMI: How to Calculate It and What It Really Means

BMI is the most common health number you will ever be quoted โ€” and one of the most misunderstood. Here is how it works and how much to trust it.

The formula

Body Mass Index is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/mยฒ). For example, 70 kg at 1.75 m is 70 รท (1.75 ร— 1.75) = 22.9. In imperial units it is weight (lb) รท height (in)ยฒ ร— 703.

What the categories mean

  • Under 18.5 โ€” underweight
  • 18.5โ€“24.9 โ€” normal range
  • 25โ€“29.9 โ€” overweight
  • 30 and above โ€” obese

Where BMI is useful

BMI is a fast, free screening tool for populations. For most people it correlates reasonably with body fat and with risks like heart disease and diabetes, which is why doctors use it as a starting point.

Its real limitations

BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat, so very muscular people can read as 'overweight' while being lean. It ignores where fat sits (belly fat is riskier), and it shifts in meaning across ages and ethnicities. Treat it as one signal among several โ€” not a verdict.

Frequently asked questions

Is BMI accurate for athletes?

Not very. BMI counts muscle the same as fat, so muscular athletes often score 'overweight' despite being lean. Body-fat measures are more meaningful for them.

What is a healthy BMI?

For most adults, 18.5โ€“24.9 is the normal range. But it is a screening number โ€” combine it with waist size, activity and how you feel, and talk to a professional for advice.

Does BMI work for children?

Children use age- and sex-specific BMI percentiles, not the adult categories, because their bodies are still developing.
