About ESI Calculator — Employee & Employer Contribution

ESI is India's statutory health insurance for lower-wage employees: 0.75% from you, 3.25% from the employer, on gross wages while you earn up to ₹21,000 a month. On an ₹18,000 gross that's ₹135 from your side — and for it, you and your dependants get full ESIC medical care with NO sum-insured ceiling, plus cash benefits private insurance doesn't offer: 70% of wages during certified sickness leave, 26 weeks of paid maternity, disablement pension and dependants' pension. The ceiling has a humane wrinkle: if a mid-year raise pushes you past ₹21,000, contributions CONTINUE until the end of the running contribution period (April–September or October–March) — you don't lose coverage the month of the hike. Eligibility is then re-tested for the next period. Contribution periods also drive benefits: cash benefits in a period depend on contributions in the prior one, which is why continuous deduction matters more than employees realize. For employers the applicability test is the establishment's: 10 or more employees (20 in some states) makes ESIC registration mandatory wherever the scheme is notified, and 'wages' for ESI is broad — basic, DA, HRA, incentives and overtime all count (washing allowance and annual bonus don't). Misclassifying wages to dodge the 3.25% is among the most commonly litigated payroll mistakes in inspections.
