Hatchability Calculator

Calculate hatchability — chicks hatched as a percentage of fertile eggs set (and of total eggs).

Hatchability is usually quoted two ways: chicks ÷ fertile eggs (measures incubation), and chicks ÷ total eggs set (measures the whole process). Good hatchability of fertile eggs is 85%+. Separating fertility from hatchability tells you whether a problem is in breeding or in the incubator.

Sources: Hatchability of fertile eggs = chicks hatched ÷ fertile eggs × 100; hatch of set = chicks ÷ total set × 100

Indicative planning figures based on published research averages. Local soil tests, varieties and weather change actual requirements — confirm with your agronomist or extension officer.

Livestock breeders and farm managers use the free Hatchability Calculator for an accurate answer in seconds — no formulas to remember, works offline at the farm.

About Hatchability Calculator

Hatchability is the key performance number for any hatchery or breeder flock, but it must be split correctly to be useful: hatch of fertile eggs measures how well the incubator did, while hatch of total eggs set also reflects fertility. This tool reports both, plus the fertility percentage, so you can tell whether disappointing chick numbers come from poor breeding-flock fertility or from incubation problems — two completely different fixes.

How to use Hatchability Calculator

  1. 1Enter your herd/flock figures into the inputs.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good hatchability percentage?+

About 85% or higher of fertile eggs is good for chickens; hatch of total eggs set is lower because it includes infertile eggs. Always note which basis is quoted — they answer different questions.

My hatch is low — is it fertility or incubation?+

Compare the two figures. If fertility (fertile ÷ set) is low, the problem is in the breeding flock — male:female ratio, nutrition, age. If fertility is fine but hatch of fertile eggs is low, the incubator's temperature, humidity, turning or egg handling is at fault.

Is this tool free and private?+

Yes — free, no sign-up, and all calculation runs in your browser, so it works offline at the farm and your data never leaves the device.
