Estimate your maize yield weeks before harvest using the universal components-of-yield method. Grain maize runs ~8 plants/m², one cob each carrying 450–550 grains at a heavy ~300 g thousand-grain weight. The formula multiplies plants per m² × cobs per plant × grains per cob × thousand-grain weight to give grains per m² and then yield: yield (kg/ha) = grains/m² × (1000-grain weight ÷ 1000) × 10.
