About NRE FD Calculator (NRI)

The NRE FD is the NRI's headline instrument: rupee deposits funded from foreign earnings whose interest is completely TAX-FREE in India (Section 10(4)) and fully repatriable — principal and interest both. At the default ₹25 lakh and 7%, that's ~₹5.8 lakh of interest with no Indian TDS, no Indian return-filing obligation on it, making the post-tax comparison with most home-country deposits lopsided. Two catches deserve respect: RESIDENCY — tax-free status lives on your NRI status; the day you return and become resident, NRE accounts must convert (to resident/RFC accounts) and the interest turns taxable, so align FD maturities with any planned return — and YOUR OTHER TAX HOME: the US, UK and others tax global income, so 'tax-free in India' may still be taxable in your country of residence (the US taxes NRE interest annually; FATCA reporting applies). The instrument's real edge varies by where you live. Versus the siblings: NRO FDs (for India-sourced income like rent) suffer 30%+ TDS and limited repatriation; FCNR(B) deposits hold foreign currency — eliminating rupee-depreciation risk at lower rates, often the smarter hold for money you'll ultimately spend abroad. The classic structure: India-bound money in NRE FDs (yield), abroad-bound money in FCNR (currency safety), India-sourced income in NRO because it has nowhere else to go.

Frequently asked questions

NRE FD ka interest sach me poora tax-free hai?+

India me haan — Section 10(4): na tax, na TDS, jab tak aap NRI/RNOR hain. Par aapke RESIDENCE country ka tax alag hai: US/UK jaise desh global income par tax lagate hain, to wahan declare karna pad sakta hai. Gulf-based NRIs ke liye yeh sach me dono taraf tax-free banta hai.

India wapas aane par NRE FD ka kya hoga?+

Resident hone par NRE accounts convert karne padte hain — FD ko maturity tak chala sakte hain par interest resident hone ke baad TAXABLE ho jata hai (RNOR window me kuch rahat possible). Plan ho ke 2-3 saal me lautna hai, to FD tenures wahi tak rakhein ya FCNR me shift karein jo maturity tak original terms par chalti hai.

NRE FD vs FCNR — kaise chunein?+

Sawaal yeh hai: paisa aakhir kahan kharch hoga? India me → NRE FD (zyada rate, rupee me hi rahega). Wapas abroad le jaana hai → FCNR(B) (USD/GBP me, rate kam par rupee girne ka risk zero). 7% NRE vs 5.5% USD FCNR ka gap rupee ke 1.5%/saal se zyada depreciation par mit jata hai — historical average usse upar raha hai.

Kya NRE FD premature todna allowed hai?+

Haan, par 1 saal se pehle todne par NRE FD me INTEREST ZERO ho jata hai (minimum tenure 1 saal hai) — yeh resident FDs se zyada sakht rule hai. Uske baad normal penalty (0.5–1%) lagti hai. Isliye NRE me bhi laddering karein aur emergency money savings-NRE me hi rakhein.
