About NSC Calculator — National Savings Certificate

NSC is the fixed-rate workhorse of the post-office family: a 5-year certificate whose rate LOCKS at purchase (unlike PPF's floating quarterly rate), compounding annually — ₹1 lakh at 7.7% matures to ₹1.45 lakh. No TDS is deducted, sovereign backing is absolute, and the minimum is a token ₹1,000 with no maximum (though 80C benefits cap at ₹1.5 lakh). The famous NSC double-dip: interest reinvests automatically each year, and that reinvested interest qualifies as a FRESH 80C deduction in its year — so a ₹1 lakh certificate quietly generates ₹7,700, ₹8,293, ₹8,931, ₹9,619 of additional 80C claims across years 1-4 (year-5 interest pays out, so it can't be 'reinvested'). Old-regime taxpayers who miss declaring this leave real deductions on the table. Where NSC fits: it beats tax-saver FDs at most banks on rate while carrying identical 5-year locks and identical interest-taxability — making it the better version of that product; it loses to PPF on tax (NSC interest is taxable at slab, PPF's is exempt) but wins on rate-locking in falling cycles and has no annual cap. Strategy note for rate watchers: when small-savings rates peak, NSC LOCKS the peak for 5 years while PPF floats back down — buying NSC at cycle tops is the small-savings equivalent of booking a long FD at the right moment.

Frequently asked questions

NSC ka interest taxable hai ya nahi?+

Taxable hai — slab par, har saal accrual basis par declare karna best practice hai. PAR pehle 4 saal ka interest reinvest hota hai isliye wahi amount 80C deduction bhi ban jata hai — net effect old regime me lagbhag tax-neutral ho jata hai un saalon me. Sirf 5th saal ka interest (jo cash me milta hai) bina matching deduction ke taxable rehta hai.

NSC vs tax-saver FD — same 5-saal lock, kya farak?+

NSC aksar jeet'ta hai: rate zyada (7.7% vs ~6.9-7%), TDS nahi kat'ta (FD me kat'ta hai), sovereign guarantee (vs DICGC ₹5 lakh), aur double-dip 80C. FD ka ek hi edge: senior-citizen premium rates. Old-regime 80C ke liye in dono me se NSC lagbhag hamesha behtar pick hai.

Kya NSC beech me cash ho sakta hai?+

Lagbhag nahi — premature encashment sirf holder ki death, court order, ya pledgee bank ki zabti par. Par NSC ko BANK ME GIRWI rakh kar loan le sakte hain (margin ~10-15%) — 5-saal lock ke beech liquidity ka yahi legitimate rasta hai. Pledge ke liye post office me NSC par lien mark hota hai.

Rate lock hone ka matlab kya hai practically?+

Aapke certificate par kharidte waqt ka rate poore 5 saal chalega, chahe sarkar agle quarter rate giraye (PPF me naya rate purane balance par bhi lagta hai). Isliye jab small-savings rates high-cycle par hon, NSC me lock karna PPF top-up se behtar tactical move hota hai. Girte cycle me naya NSC sasta milta hai — tab PPF/SSY ka floating structure rahat deta hai.
