Offshore BOSIET / HUET Certificate Tracker

BOSIET is valid 4 years from completion. Renewal isn't repeating BOSIET — it's FOET (Further Offshore Emergency Training), a shorter refresher that must be completed BEFORE the BOSIET/previous FOET expires; let it lapse and you're back to the full BOSIET course at full length and cost. The certificate must typically be valid for your whole planned trip, not just departure day. Book FOET into a field break inside the 120-day window — simulator capacity at OPITO-approved centres is the binding constraint, especially in busy seasons.

HUET — Helicopter Underwater Escape Training — is the helicopter-ditching escape module: the dunker, inversion, window exit, and (in cold-water regimes) emergency breathing systems. BOSIET is the broader OPITO basic offshore induction that CONTAINS HUET plus sea survival, firefighting/self-rescue and first-aid elements. Some roles and regimes accept standalone HUET (e.g. certain transiting personnel or non-OPITO regimes); most production offshore work in OPITO basins requires the full BOSIET. When a client says 'HUET', confirm whether they mean standalone or BOSIET-inclusive — the course lengths and prices differ substantially.

A maximum of 2 years, and the examining doctor can certify shorter where a condition warrants review. It must be issued by an OGUK/OEUK-registered examiner, and operators verify it alongside survival certification at mobilization. Two traps: the medical expiring mid-hitch (operators want validity through the trip — renew on the break before), and pairing requirements like the CA-EBS shoulder-width measurement in some regimes, recorded separately. The medical is also where fitness issues surface — booking early in the amber window leaves time to resolve a referral instead of losing a rotation to it.

Partially at best. Offshore wind runs on the GWO (Global Wind Organisation) standard stack — Basic Safety Training modules (first aid, manual handling, fire awareness, working at heights, and Sea Survival for offshore sites) with 2-year refresher cycles — and wind operators generally require GWO certificates regardless of an oil-and-gas history. Some training overlaps in content but not in certification: BOSIET doesn't substitute for GWO Sea Survival on a wind contract. Crews working both sectors carry both stacks, which is exactly the multi-clock problem a single matrix per person solves.
