Seedling Requirement Calculator

Work out how many seedlings (with a mortality buffer) you need to transplant an area.

Raise more seedlings than the final plant stand to cover transplant shock and gap-filling. Seedlings = plant population ร— area ร— (1 + buffer). A 10โ€“15% buffer is typical; raise it for tender crops or risky weather.

Indicative planning figures based on published research averages. Local soil tests, varieties and weather change actual requirements โ€” confirm with your agronomist or extension officer.

About Seedling Requirement Calculator

Raising the right number of seedlings avoids both a shortfall (gappy field, lost yield) and waste (over-raised nursery). This tool works out how many seedlings to raise for a transplanted crop from the area, the planned spacing, and a mortality buffer for transplant shock and gap-filling. It first derives the final plant population from your spacing, scales it to the area, then adds the buffer โ€” so your nursery produces just enough healthy seedlings to fill the field with some to spare.

Frequently asked questions

How many seedlings do I need per acre?+

Multiply the plant population per acre (10,000 รท row ร— plant spacing in m, then ร—0.4047) by 1 plus your mortality buffer. For 50 ร— 30 cm spacing that's about 27,000 plants/acre, or ~30,000 seedlings with a 10% buffer.

Why raise extra seedlings beyond the plant population?+

Some seedlings die of transplant shock or don't establish, and you need spares to gap-fill within a week of transplanting for a uniform stand. A 10โ€“15% buffer is usual, more for delicate crops or uncertain weather.

Is this tool free and private?+

Yes โ€” free, no sign-up, and all calculation runs in your browser, so it works offline and your data never leaves the device.
