How many seedlings do I need per acre?+
Multiply the plant population per acre (10,000 รท row ร plant spacing in m, then ร0.4047) by 1 plus your mortality buffer. For 50 ร 30 cm spacing that's about 27,000 plants/acre, or ~30,000 seedlings with a 10% buffer.
Why raise extra seedlings beyond the plant population?+
Some seedlings die of transplant shock or don't establish, and you need spares to gap-fill within a week of transplanting for a uniform stand. A 10โ15% buffer is usual, more for delicate crops or uncertain weather.
