Documents are generated entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded. Templates follow common international practice; verify country-specific and contract-specific requirements (and any LC text) with your broker, bank or counsel before use.
The bill of lading is three documents wearing one form: a receipt for the goods, the contract of carriage, and — in negotiable form — a document of title that banks treat as the cargo itself. Only carriers issue operative B/Ls; what this generator produces is the shipper-side draft — the version you build from your shipping instructions to verify the carrier's draft against, field by field, before approving it for issue.
About Bill of Lading Generator (Draft)
That verification pass is where money is saved: B/L amendments after issue cost $50–150 each plus days, and LC presentations fail on B/L details more than any other document. The fields here are the ones banks and customs read literally — consignee form (named versus TO ORDER decides negotiability), the on-board date (LCs hang on it), freight prepaid/collect (must match the LC), the goods description (verbatim against invoice and LC), and the originals count (three originals means the cargo releases against any one of them). The 'said to contain' phrasing in the goods block is deliberate and worth understanding: for sealed containers the carrier acknowledges receiving a sealed box said to contain your cargo — it's counting packages, not verifying contents. That limits the B/L's evidentiary weight on contents (your packing list and stuffing records carry that) while keeping it conclusive on the container, seal and count the carrier did verify.

Frequently asked questions
Can I issue my own bill of lading?+
Not an operative one — the B/L is the carrier's (or NVOCC's) document; they sign as carrier and it binds them. What shippers produce is instructions (the SI) and verification drafts like this one. NVOCCs and freight forwarders DO issue house B/Ls as contracting carriers — if you're a forwarder, your house B/L follows this same anatomy with your company as carrier.
What does 'TO ORDER' in the consignee box actually do?+
It makes the B/L negotiable: title transfers by endorsing and delivering the document, so 'TO ORDER OF [BANK]' lets the bank control the cargo until payment — the mechanism letters of credit run on. A named consignee (straight B/L) fixes delivery to that party and kills negotiability. The choice belongs to the payment terms, not logistics convenience.
Why do LCs care so much about the on-board date?+
Because the LC's latest-shipment date is enforced against it: a B/L dated one day after the LC's shipment deadline is a discrepancy, full stop. 'Shipped on board' notation with date (versus 'received for shipment') is what banks require. Verify the date on the carrier's draft against the vessel's actual loading — and never accept a future-dated or backdated notation, which is fraud territory.
What happens if original B/Ls are lost?+
A genuine problem: the carrier delivered title with the paper. Standard resolution is delivery against a bank-backed letter of indemnity (often 100–200% of cargo value) plus time, or court orders in stubborn cases. Prevention is structural: courier originals trackably and split the set (2+1), or avoid originals entirely — seaway bills and telex release exist precisely because lost-original recovery is so painful.
