CGPA to Percentage Calculator

Convert CGPA to percentage (and back) using the CBSE ×9.5 rule, the simple ×10 rule, or the (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 university formula.

Converted value
Formula applied

There is no single universal formula — CBSE's ×9.5 was derived from board-topper average marks, while many universities (Mumbai, VTU, AKTU and others) gazette their own conversion. For job applications and visa/WES evaluations, always use the formula printed on YOUR university's official conversion certificate; this tool covers the three formulas that dominate Indian academia.

Formula

CBSE: % = CGPA × 9.5 · Simple: % = CGPA × 10 · Mumbai/VTU style: % = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10

Frequently asked questions

Why does CBSE multiply CGPA by 9.5 instead of 10?+

CBSE studied the marks of students scoring A1 (top grade) across five subjects and found their average was about 95%, not 100% — so one CGPA point ≈ 9.5 percentage points. A perfect 10 CGPA therefore maps to 95%, not 100%. It's an empirical equivalence, not exact arithmetic, which is why CBSE itself calls it an 'indicative' percentage.

Which formula should I use for my university?+

Use the formula your university officially gazettes — it's usually printed on the degree certificate, the conversion certificate, or the academic ordinances page. CBSE school results use × 9.5. Many NITs/IITs and 10-point universities accept × 10 or issue their own certificate. Mumbai University and VTU-pattern institutions use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. When an employer just says 'convert your CGPA', attach the official certificate.

What is 8.2 CGPA in percentage?+

Depends on the formula: CBSE × 9.5 gives 77.9%, simple × 10 gives 82%, and (8.2 − 0.75) × 10 gives 74.5%. The spread is why you must use your own institution's formula — the same CGPA differs by up to 7–8 percentage points between conversion rules, which can matter for cutoffs.

Do foreign universities and WES accept these conversions?+

Credential evaluators like WES generally re-derive their own US-scale GPA from your individual marks rather than trusting a converted percentage. For applications, report what your transcript shows, attach your university's official conversion certificate if one exists, and let the evaluator convert. Never self-convert with an unofficial formula on a legal form.
