Reading Time Calculator

Estimate how long a text takes to read from its word count and reading speed — for essays, articles, books and assigned chapters.

Reading time
In minutes (min)
Approx. pages (≈275 words/page)

The best modern estimate of adult silent reading (Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis of 190 studies) puts non-fiction at ~238 wpm and fiction at ~260 wpm. Dense technical material with equations or unfamiliar terminology drops real comprehension speed to 50–150 wpm — that's why a 20-page paper 'reads' like a novella. Blogs and Medium use ~265 wpm for their read-time badges.

Formula

reading time = word count ÷ words per minute · average adult silent-reading speed ≈ 240 wpm for non-fiction

About Reading Time Calculator

The reading time calculator converts a word count into honest minutes: paste in the length of the article, essay, chapter or novel, pick a pace, and get the time it actually takes — plus the equivalent in standard manuscript pages. The default 240 words per minute comes from the largest meta-analysis of adult silent reading ever done (190 studies), so the estimate is grounded, not folklore. Pick the studying pace for textbooks and technical papers (real comprehension reading runs 100–150 wpm) or skimming for a triage pass. Writers and editors use it in reverse: to know what '5-minute read' means in words, or to size a newsletter so it respects the reader's coffee break.

How to use Reading Time Calculator

  1. 1Enter your values into Reading Time Calculator — sensible, domain-typical defaults are pre-filled so you see a real result immediately.
  2. 2The result recomputes live using the formula shown on the page; there is no button to press.
  3. 3Adjust any input to compare scenarios, then read the worked example to see the substituted numbers.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to read 1,000 / 5,000 / 80,000 words?+

At the average adult pace of ~240 wpm: 1,000 words ≈ 4 minutes, 5,000 words ≈ 21 minutes, and an 80,000-word novel ≈ 5.5 hours of pure reading time. Spread over sessions with normal interruptions, that novel is a comfortable week of evening reading — which is also why publishers target 80–100k words for commercial fiction.

What's the average reading speed for adults?+

Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis of 190 studies puts adult silent reading at roughly 238 wpm for non-fiction and 260 wpm for fiction — meaningfully slower than the '300 wpm average' often quoted. College-level study reading with note-taking runs 100–150 wpm, and proofreading slower still. Speed-reading claims above ~500 wpm with full comprehension are not supported by the research.

How do websites calculate 'X min read'?+

Almost all of them divide word count by a fixed rate — Medium famously uses ~265 wpm with a small image allowance. They typically ignore code blocks, tables and figures, which is why technical posts always take longer than the badge claims. If you're adding a read-time badge to your own site, words ÷ 240–265 is the industry-standard estimate.

How many words is a page?+

The standard manuscript convention — double-spaced, 12-point Times — is about 275 words per page (the figure this calculator uses). Single-spaced runs ~550, and a typeset paperback page holds 250–300 depending on trim size. For assigned reading, multiply the page count by ~275 and divide by your study pace for the real time commitment.
