Every shift worked on a lapsed license is unlicensed practice — a disciplinary matter for the board (fines, reprimand, possible suspension that follows the license permanently via Nursys), a termination matter for most employers, and a liability problem (malpractice coverage can be contested for unlicensed periods). Reinstatement typically costs late fees, proof of CE, and time off the schedule. Boards rarely accept 'I didn't notice' — renewal is the licensee's personal duty. A 90-day flag plus an afternoon of CE and a portal payment is the entire cost of never facing any of it.

Two years from the course date, for both, under American Heart Association rules — and the date is whenever the class happened to run, so a clinician's BLS and ACLS rarely expire together. Renewal requires a class (full or abbreviated renewal format; HeartCode online-plus-skills options exist) with an instructor and a seat, not just a payment — so an expired card discovered the week before a credentialing deadline can't always be fixed in time. Many hospitals hard-stop scheduling for expired cards. Track both dates per clinician and consolidate renewals where possible to reduce the calendar sprawl.

The dependencies that can't be rushed: continuing-education hours that must be completed before the renewal filing (the most common late-discovery problem), fingerprinting or background-check refreshes some states require, employer verifications, and the board's own processing time — some boards take weeks, and practicing in the gap between expiry and approval is still lapsed practice. For multi-state nurses, compact (NLC) status adds a layer: the home-state license drives the multistate privilege, and a primary-state move changes the chain. Start at amber; file early; never schedule into the gap.

The principle is identical at any scale: one row per person per credential, primary-source dates (the board's record, not the photocopy), a forward-looking warning window, and a defined owner for chasing renewals. Hospitals layer credentialing/privileging cycles (typically every 2 years) and payer-enrollment dates on top of licensure; agencies add placement-eligibility screens.
