Field notes from maintenance practice
Depreciation each year = WDV rate × opening written-down value. Under the Income Tax Act, assets are grouped into 'blocks' with prescribed rates (commonly 15% for plant and machinery, 40% for computers and certain energy-saving devices, 10% for furniture), and depreciation is computed on the block's WDV rather than asset by asset. With a ₹10,00,000 machine at 15%, year one is ₹1,50,000, year two ₹1,27,500, and so on.
WDV front-loads the deduction (useful for tax) and reflects how most plant and machinery loses value faster early on. Note a key Income-Tax rule: if an asset is used for less than 180 days in the year it's acquired, only half the depreciation rate applies that first year — a common adjustment to remember when reconciling the schedule.

About WDV Depreciation Calculator (India)
The written-down-value (WDV) method — also called reducing or diminishing balance — is the standard depreciation method under the Indian Income Tax Act, and a permitted method under the Companies Act, 2013. It applies a fixed percentage to the asset's reducing book value each year, so depreciation is highest in year one and falls thereafter. This calculator shows the full year-by-year WDV schedule in rupees.

Frequently asked questions
What is the WDV (written-down-value) method?+
It depreciates an asset by a fixed percentage of its reducing book value each year: depreciation = rate × opening WDV, and the closing WDV carries to next year. Because it's applied to a shrinking balance, the expense is largest in year one and declines over time, and the book value approaches but never quite reaches zero.
What depreciation rates apply under the Indian Income Tax Act?+
Rates are prescribed by asset block — commonly 15% for general plant and machinery, 40% for computers and software and certain pollution-control/energy-saving equipment, 10% for furniture and fittings, and specific rates for buildings (5–10%) and vehicles. Depreciation is computed on the written-down value of the whole block of assets, not individually. Confirm the current rates, as they're amended periodically.
What is the 180-day rule for depreciation in India?+
Under the Income Tax Act, if an asset is put to use for less than 180 days in the year of acquisition, only 50% of the normal depreciation rate is allowed in that first year; the full rate resumes the following year. It's a frequent adjustment when an asset is bought in the second half of the financial year — factor it into year one when reconciling to the tax computation.
How does WDV differ from the Companies Act SLM method?+
The Companies Act, 2013 lets companies use either WDV or straight-line (SLM), based on the asset's useful life in Schedule II, for their financial statements — while the Income Tax Act mandates WDV on blocks of assets (with the exception of power-generating units) for tax. So a company often maintains book depreciation (SLM or WDV per Schedule II) and separate tax depreciation (WDV on blocks), reconciling the difference. This calculator models the WDV mechanics for either.
