Welding Fume / Shop Air Dashboard
Log respirable particulate readings for a welding or fabrication shop and watch latest, average, min/max, in-range % and excursions against a mg/m³ acceptable band.
Acceptable band: ≤ 5 mg/m³. Readings are timestamped and stored in your browser only.

Field notes from maintenance practice
General particulate is a proxy, not a substitute for exposure assessment: the dangerous components (Cr(VI) from stainless, manganese affecting the nervous system) have limits far below total fume, and confirming compliance needs personal sampling and lab analysis. Use this dashboard to verify that local exhaust ventilation and fume extraction keep the shop air trending low, and watch spikes when extraction is off or mispositioned. Welding fume is a recognised carcinogen, and the metals in it (hexavaldent chromium, manganese, nickel) have very low exposure limits — so general particulate monitoring is a screening tool that flags when local exhaust ventilation isn't capturing the plume.
Consistency makes the numbers meaningful: measure at the same point, with the same instrument, at sensible intervals (continuous where the risk is high, spot-checks where it is low). The in-range percentage is the metric to watch — a band that quietly drifts from 100% toward 95% is telling you something is changing before any single reading alarms.

About Welding Fume / Shop Air Dashboard
This dashboard turns scattered respirable particulate checks for a welding or fabrication shop into a monitored series: log a reading whenever you measure and it tracks the latest value, the average, the min/max range, the percentage of readings inside the acceptable band and the number of excursions — the everyday telemetry picture, computed in your browser with no logger subscription. The default acceptable band is below ~5 mg/m³ general welding-fume guidance (specific metals — Cr(VI), manganese — have far lower limits).
How to use Welding Fume / Shop Air Dashboard
- 1Log a reading whenever you measure — each is timestamped and stored in your browser.
- 2The dashboard shows latest, average, min/max, in-range % and an excursion count against the acceptable band.
- 3Watch the sparkline and the in-range percentage — a falling in-range % is your early warning before a hard excursion.
Why use Welding Fume / Shop Air Dashboard?

Frequently asked questions
What is the acceptable respirable particulate range for a welding or fabrication shop?+
The default band is below ~5 mg/m³ general welding-fume guidance (specific metals — Cr(VI), manganese — have far lower limits). Treat it as a sensible starting point — your own specification, regulator, equipment manual or product datasheet sets the authoritative limits, and you can read your true band straight off the worst case those documents allow. Edit the readings against whatever band applies to you.
Is general fume monitoring enough for welding safety?+
No — it's a useful screen but not a compliance assessment. Welding fume was reclassified as a Group 1 human carcinogen, and its hazardous constituents have stringent, metal-specific exposure limits: hexavalent chromium (from stainless and chrome-coated steel) and manganese (a neurotoxin) have limits far below total particulate, so air can look 'okay' on a general monitor while a specific metal is over its limit. Proper protection means engineering controls first (local exhaust ventilation, fume extraction at the arc), then respiratory protection, with periodic personal air sampling and lab analysis to prove exposures. This dashboard helps verify that ventilation is keeping general fume down — treat it as one layer, not the whole programme.
How often should I log respirable particulate readings?+
Match the interval to the consequence and the rate of change: where an excursion spoils product or risks safety, log continuously (or as often as you can sample); where it is merely informative, daily or per-shift spot checks suffice. The in-range % and excursion count only mean something if your sampling is regular — sparse, irregular readings hide the excursions between them.
Is my logged data private?+
Yes — every reading is stored in this browser's localStorage on your device and nothing is uploaded to any server, which also makes the dashboard usable on sites with strict data policies. For shared, audit-grade records across a team or for regulatory retention, export the values into your own system.
