Customs clearance is the journey stage where the cargo stops moving and the documents start — and where a one-day response delay becomes three days of storage, because queues restart rather than resume. This board tracks every entry through the eight states that matter: docs to broker, filed, assessment, query, exam, duty, released, delivered.
About Customs Clearance Status Board
The high-cost statuses are the interactive ones. 'Query raised' means customs or the broker needs something from YOU — an invoice breakup, a certificate, a clarification — and every hour it waits is queue position lost. 'Exam / inspection' means the clock is now official; pair it with the exam-fee estimator to budget the event. Rows stalled at 'Docs to broker' are self-inflicted and the cheapest to fix. The board also quietly scores your broker: filed-to-released time per entry, query rates, and how often 'filed' happened before arrival (pre-filing is the single biggest clearance accelerator in most regimes — ICEGATE advance BOE in India, pre-arrival processing in the US). A quarter of entries is a broker review meeting that runs on data.

Frequently asked questions
What does each customs status actually mean?+
'Entry filed' — the declaration is lodged and queued; 'Under assessment' — customs is reviewing value/classification; 'Query raised' — they need information (respond same-day; the queue restarts after you answer); 'Exam' — physical or scan inspection ordered; 'Duty paid' and 'Released' close the regulatory hold. The expensive misunderstanding is treating filed as done — assessment and queries are where the days live.
How do I make customs clearance faster?+
Pre-file wherever the regime allows (advance BOE in India, pre-arrival in the US/EU), send complete docs to the broker before the vessel arrives, answer queries within hours, and keep product master data (HS codes, valuations, certificates) consistent shipment to shipment — repeat mismatches are what train the system to query you. Most 'slow customs' is actually slow paperwork.
Who is responsible when clearance stalls — broker or importer?+
Mechanically the broker files and follows up; substantively the importer owns document quality and query answers. The board's stall pattern reveals which: entries stuck at 'Docs to broker' or 'Query raised' point at your desk; entries filed promptly but sitting in 'Under assessment' across many shipments point at the broker's follow-up or the product's risk profile.
Does a customs hold pause storage and demurrage charges?+
Rarely automatically — terminal and CFS clocks usually keep running through holds, with waiver paths where the delay is attributable to customs itself (exam queues, system outages). Capture the hold and release timestamps on this board; they're the evidence for those waiver applications and for disputing charges the hold caused. The hold's cost is exactly why query-response speed matters.
